The importance of exercise for Teenagers

Regular exercise is important to teenagers because it helps maintain their physical and mental health. Teens should strive for at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity daily, aiming to spend less time being sedentary and more time being active. If teenagers can discover physical activities they enjoy, they are more likely to exercise on a regular basis and continue exercising into adulthood. Parents can and should encourage teenagers to exercise regularly by setting a good example and becoming more active themselves.

Current activity levels in teens are extremely low. Most teenagers don’t participate in a sport or in a daily activity, which leaves them highly sedentary. Even during the school period, students only get an average of 60-90 minutes of moderate exercise during the entire week.

Obesity, mental health and self confidence in teenagers are closely linked to one another and are a major issue in teenagers. Regular exercise is just one method which can help parents and teens to live healthier and have more control of their lives. So if you are a parent, ask yourself whether or not you feel your child is getting enough exercise
