Eating Late Snack Ideas

Eating late has often been frowned upon as a major no-no for people looking to stay in shape, not to mention if you are trying to lose weight. Unfortunately this is a common misconception.

When we understand why people are encouraged not to eat late it might make more sense.

For someone to shift fat they need to be in a calorie deficit which means they need to be taking in less calories than they will burn off so the body will go into the fat stores to make up that difference.

For a lot of people their days can be long enough from the time they get up to the time they go to bed and often we have consumed our calories for the day, reduced calories keep in mind, by the time the evening rolls around so when you start picking at something at this later stage often what can happen is you are just topping up that deficit with extra calories and your fat loss efforts slow down.

One question we have to ask is why are you hungry later at night? for some it’s because of boredom and it’s a bad habit, for others it’s because they haven’t taken in enough calories during the day and it leaves the body very short so it goes on the hunt.

If it’s just boredom you are going to have to find a hobby or develop your will power (more on that in another post) but if it’s a thing that you didn’t get in enough calories then it’s ok to still take in something to kill the hunger because you body needs the energy. But it’s what you take in we have to be careful of.

In the Eating Late Cheat Sheet below, we go into what are good snack ideas for later in the evening. Click the link and download it directly. If you get some value out of this, please feel free to share this blog with your late night snacker friends

The whole principle around this list of foods takes 3 things into account:

  1. each snack is 200calorie, and you have to be vigilant in keeping to this. This is your snack, that’s it. Don’t mindlessly keep going
  2. they key is to go for easily digestible foods, wholegrain carbs, healthy fats and easily digestible protein
  3. anything that has higher sugar in it, even naturally occurring, such as banana needs to be balanced by a protein source to prevent the spike in blood sugars.

If you follow these 3 rules you can mix and match other foods as well.

Remember you don’t have to cut out foods just be smarter about total calorie intake and what food options you go for.
